As Flip-flops Fall Flat, Footwear Companies Step In to Provide Alternatives

Added: 01-18-2008

Unique Summer Footwear Provides Comfort, Support and Style

Bethesda, Md. – Flip-flop, flip-flop, it’s a sound many are used to hearing as their popular summer slip-ons slap against their feet. But as the popularity of flip-flops reaches new heights with teenagers and twenty-somethings, so too do the number of flip-flop related foot injuries. Known for their simple design and go with any outfit style, flip-flops offer little in terms of arch support, foot protection and shock absorption.

"Tendinitis, arch-pain and sprained ankles are just some of the problems flip-flops can cause. They can also make existing problems worse. Simply put, flip-flops just aren’t good for your feet," said Dr. David Schofield president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). "There are alternatives to flip-flops that allow your feet to enjoy summer in a more supportive shoe."

Flip-flops’ flimsy support and protection has savvy shoppers looking for a more sophisticated summer sandal. In fact, a recent survey found that 33 percent of women say that comfort is more important than fashion when choosing shoes. APMA Seal-holding companies, such as Crocs, Chaco, Dansko and Rockport all feature collections of summer footwear that provide feet not only protection, but also support and style. Each shoe line has been awarded the Seal for meeting the association’s high podiatric standards. APMA’s Seal program recognizes products that set the benchmark for the footwear and foot care industry. Evaluated by a committee of APMA member podiatrists, these products are shown to allow normal foot function and promote quality foot health.
