Dealing with persistent or recurring heel pain? It may be time to see a podiatrist.
If plantar fasciitis is keeping you from your favorite activities then it may be time to do something about it, and The Wisconsin Podiatric Medical Association can help. We provide patients living in the Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison, Wausau and LaCrosse, WI areas with a wide range of podiatrists that can address their specific needs and problems.
What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. In the soles of the feet, there is a thick ligament that runs from the heel bone to the toes and provides support for the feet’s arches. If the ligament becomes overstretched or overused this can cause tiny tears in the tissue, which in turn causes inflammation.
What are the signs of plantar fasciitis?
The most common sign is a stabbing pain that originates in the heel under the heel bone. The pain may be accompanied by stiffness, which can radiate to the arches of the feet, as well. Symptoms may be worse first thing in the morning or after bouts of inactivity. As you start moving you may notice a decrease in the pain. This problem can happen to anyone but it most often occurs in runners.
When should I see a podiatrist?
If you believe that you might have plantar fasciitis but you aren’t sure it’s best to play it safe and schedule an appointment with a foot doctor who can diagnose and treat your condition. After all, getting the treatment you need sooner also means getting the quick relief you deserve. You should also see a doctor for your heel pain if,
- The pain remains even when you are at rest and aren’t putting weight on the foot
- Symptoms don’t get better after a week of rest and home care
- The pain is the result of a foot injury (e.g. bad fall; car accidents; sports incident)
A podiatrist will be able to provide you with the care and treatment you need to get back on your feet and ready to tackle those hills (or even just the flight of stairs in your apartment complex).
